Super Bowl Sunday and My Dad
As I get ready to watch the Super Bowl today, I was reminded of a blog I wrote a few years ago. I lost my Dad on Super Bowl Sunday in 2006. That was the year Pittsburgh & Seattle met. Super Bowl Sunday is always a time for reflection.
Here's the blog I wrote about my Dad in 2011.
Enjoy your day!
MY DAD & VINCE LOMBARDI
My Dad & Vince Lombardi are linked for life. They never met & I bet the only thing they had in common was a love for football.
Vince Lombardi of course was the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers. He won the first 2 Super Bowls as their coach. The trophy awarded to the winning team is named after him. It has been since 1970.
I read this week that 78% of all Americans will be watching. I’ll be one of them.
Once again this year I'll be watching the game with mixed emotions. It was Super Bowl Sunday 8 years ago that I lost my Dad. It seems like yesterday yet it seems like 100 years ago. If you've ever lost someone close, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
My Dad of course got me into football when I was young. I still remember watching the 1964 NFL Championship as a 7 year old. It was the last time my team, the Cleveland Browns, were NFL champs. If you’re a Chicago Cubs fan you know what I’ve been through—a lifetime of “wait til next year!”
As a kid growing up in North Jersey, the local high school (which I would later attend), would play their cross town rival on Thanksgiving. Even in the snow my Dad would take me. This is where my love of football first took shape. I’ve been a fan ever since…thanks to my Dad.
I’ll be thinking of you a lot this weekend, Dad. And here’s hoping someday soon you’ll be smiling down on me as OUR team finally plays in the big game.
