Our Engagement Party!

Happy Monday Friends! It was quite the fun-filled/love-filled weekend, so i'm dragging a bit today. Saturday, my future IN- LAWS (that's one of the first times i've said that - still strange that it applies to me!) hosted an ENGAGEMENT PARTY for John and I. It was beautiful. They rented a huge heated tent, had it catered by an incredible italian catering company, and invited many of our close friends and family. Friends and family traveled up to 5 hours to join us and celebrate our engagement and it couldn't have been a more perfect day. Well, a few degrees warmer would have been nice, but no snow or rain ... we'll take it! We ate, laughed, and had a great time with everyone who made it!

I did most of the decorations myself ... with the help of my MOH, Tanya. She made the incredibly cute RING TAGS that we slipped onto the stem of the wine glasses. I kept a ton of them to put in my scrapbook because I'm still not over how cute they are! The sign I did myself after seeing a similar one on Etsy. It was a fun project and everyone commented on how cute it was! It was really great to spend time with friends and family and it was so good to see many we haven't seen in a while.

Now that the engagement party has passed . . . it's time to start checking things off of our wedding to-do list. This week ... CAKE! I'll be back later in the week as we have an appointment with the most incredible cake artist around!!! :)

Speaking of... my Aunt Pam was obsessed with talking about the cake at the party. She brought us a beautiful engraved cake server set with matching champagne flutes as an engagement gift. Since she gifted us the cake server, she wanted to make her preference be known that she would prefer us to not get a fondant cake.

So I ask . . . PAST/PRESENT BRIDES: Did you choose a buttercream or fondant cake?

dirty icing!
as far as her preference of cake.. who's wedding is it? lol it is nice to keep in mind what you think everyone would enjoy BUT in the end, it really comes down to what YOU want. Fondant (done right) is really tasty, the commercial premade stuff tastes more like a gummy marshmallow. However, all fondant cakes are dirty iced with buttercream! and it is usually a thick layer, the fondant smooths over nicely and is very thin, so IF you decided to go for a fondant cake guests who don't like fondant can merely take that layer off! I myself make cakes for smaller occasions on the side and I like the look and creative aspect to fondant but unless i have the time to make homemade fondant from scratch the flavor is lacking. Buttercream is a thick and sturdy icing which is the general icing of choice for any cakes, whipped won't hold up as well in warmer temps or being set out as a wedding cake. You have alot of options either way. My husband and I are wedding photographers and we have seen many cakes that have a bottom fondant layer and a second and top layer of butter cream with different designs done in icing, fondant, molding chocolate and gum paste.. some done with just butter cream and then the flowers and decorative designs done in the gum paste and fondant, and then whole cakes covered in fondant.. You can even make it so the layers that are on top are fake and only the bottom is real for you to cut for the "cutting of the cake" and then they have a basic sheet cake with fondant in the back that is distributed for guests. it really all depends on what style of design you want on your cake and if the decorations or the actual cake is more important. There are so many options today it gives the bride and groom a lot more options to fit their budgets and their personal style and taste! Good luck and happy cake shopping!! ps.. my personal fave is red velvet with buttercream :) -Jen

cake choice
The cake we displayed and cut was fondant but we had different flavored sheet cakes in the kitchen that we offered the guests. That way they could choose their favorite. It can end up being cheaper this way as well since the more ornate cut/display cake can be smaller.
