Who will you ENDURE for?

I can't believe it's that time again!

Sunday, August 3rd, is the 6th Annual Endure Bike ride to benefit the American Cancer Society. This is one of my favorite rides of the year for a number of reasons. It's well organized, it's in my backyard in the Back Mountain, AND part of the ride includes Wyoming Avenue from Kingston to 8th Street!

14 million cancer survivors are celebrating birthdays this year because of your help. Who will YOU endure for?

Choose your distance: 10, 36 or 62 miles.

Want to register? Go to ACSEndure.org

Want to volunteer? Call 1.800.227.2345

Want to donate? CLICK HERE to go to my ENDURE page.

See you August 3rd at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre.

July 23, 2014 ~ Gio and Frankie bring joy

It's been a VERY happy couple days for me! Two of the biggest reasons are 1) my best friend Desiree giving birth to a beeeeeautiful healthy baby boy last Wednesday - his name is Giovanni, he's an angel with a smile that never goes away! And 2) a TERRIFIC turnout for Frankie's Voice 5K on Sunday! This run/walk was in memory of 24 yr old Frank Bonacci from Dunmore who was killed last year at this time. All proceeds went to anti-violence and children's advocacy groups. We had the organizers and some of Frankie's family on the air with us on Friday - wonderful people!

And look for this race footage on Dateline at some point, the crew was there all morning filming us. I'm sure they're doing a whole episode on Frankie. Thanks everyone who made this such an inspirational day!

Jenis and I meeting Desiree's baby Gio!

Played a gig at Andy Gavin's the night before the race, BIG THANKS to my girls Missy & Jen Esken for coming out!

Frankie's Voice 5K Run/Walk!! Orange was his favorite color....

My boyfriend convinced me to walk instead of run. That's how you know it's true love.

Great job Scranton!!!

Wow! It was a sea of orange at Nay Aug Park in Scranton Sunday morning for the 1st Annual Frankie's Voice 5K Walk/Run.

Frankie of course is Frankie Bonacci, who was brutally murdered 1 year ago. What a show of support and solidarity.

Lissa & I were so proud to be a part of this event. Way to go Scranton!!! And GREAT JOB by Frankie's family & friends and all the volunteers that made this special day possible.

We're still waiting for the final total as far as participants, but I can remember getting passed by a runner with the number 838!

Again, AWESOME JOB!!! I love to see the community come together and turn a negative into a positive event like today.

You Can't Take a Bad Photo in Maine

Sue and I just got back from an amazing week in her home state, Maine. What a great road trip!
And yes, YOU CAN'T TAKE A BAD PHOTO IN MAINE!!!

Look closely. Those are seals or sea dogs as they call them in Maine. Our captain pointed them out as we took a day trip to Monhegan Island.

This incredible view is on Monhegan Island, an island accessible only by boat. And as you can imagine, this point has been a favorite of painters for years.

The majestic Island Inn on Monhegan. This classic Maine hotel has been on this spot since 1907.

The view from the porch at the Island Inn.

It wouldn't be Maine without lobster. This is one of many little fishing villages you can find along the coast.

By far, the best lobster roll we ever had, came out of this little food truck in Cape Elizabeth.

One of 7 lighthouses spotted on our river boat cruise along the Kennebec.

A little roadside Americana in Midcoast Maine.

And our kids, Frankie & Sammi had just as much fun as we did!

If you are ever planning a trip to Maine, feel free to give me a shout at rocky@985krz.com

Crowd Pleaser!

Hi! Hope you had a great 4th of July weekend! I tweeted a photo of my famous Jell-O shots and had so many people ask how I made them, so that's what you'll find in this blog. I've been making these red, white, and blue Jell-O shots for a few years and EVERYONE loves them. If you prepare a few days in advance they are REALLY easy to make.

All of the little cups and lids are found at Party City ... it's the Jell-O that's the problem. Finding WHITE Jell-O is a chore, but if you're willing spend a little extra, I found Pina Colada Jell-O on Amazon and that's what I used! (It takes awesome too!) The trick to these jello shots is to let each layer color set in the fridge for an entire day before adding the next layer on top! For first timers - make jello like you normally would, but replace the COLD cup of water, with a cup of vodka or rum! I used a different flavor vodka for each color Jell-O!

In all, it takes 3 days to make these ... but trust me, it's totally worth it. They are a total CROWD PLEASER on the 4th of July! Save for next year! :) XO

Don't Phunk with my Heart

(Day 2 after heart surgery. Nice puffy hands from all the fluid in my system. That heart pillow wasn't for show. It made it less painful to cough or sneeze!)

It was 5 years ago today that I had heart surgery. I am forever grateful to Dr. Casale, Dr. Stella, my PA Doug Long and all the nurses & staff at the Geisinger Heart Hospital that got me through a difficult time in my life.

Before I left work, I sent out the following email.

Subject: ROCK'S SUMMER SABBATICAL
Hello everyone!

I thought I'd get everyone caught up on my "Summer Sabbatical" in case you haven't heard. I will be off the radio for the entire month of July.

Last October I went in for a physical, and my doc found a heart murmur. Pretty crazy because just a month earlier I ran a 1/2 marathon and had no symptoms at all. More tests determined I had a leaky valve.

Hold off on the pig valve jokes as I won't need it replaced. Thankfully. Tuesday I am having valve repair surgery @ Geisinger, WB. My surgeon, Dr. Casale, says I should be in the hospital 3-5 days and home 4-6 weeks. After that, I should be good as new and able to run & workout like before.

Have a good day,
Rock

It’s still hard to believe.  One minute you are feeling perfectly fine, and the next, doctors are telling you that there are serious problems.

What did I learn from all this?

Be proactive! Take care of your body. And don’t write off those annual checkups. One exam could save your life. It saved mine!

June 25, 2014 ~ sunrise sunset

Yesterday was my 4th anniversary on air at WKRZ. Seems like just yesterday I was getting death threats cuz I was "new".... awwwwww. When I first moved here, I'd never been to Pennsylvania in my LIFE - I was terrified! Didn't know a soul, I cried a few (or more) times a week cuz I missed my family, never had money (hey did you know moving's expensive? derrrrr), and my apartment in Wilkes Barre was smack in the middle of Stabby Row. Not good times.

But now, happily settled, beautiful safe apartment in Pittston, boyfriend I love in Scranton, friends I'll have for the rest of my LIFE, and listeners who (save a few nutjobs) stopped threatening to kill me a long time ago. Haha I really appreciate everyone I've met in this NEPA community! I feel like the KRZ family is my own and I truly treasure it and thank God for it. Doesn't mean I don't cry from time to time cuz I miss my Michigan family, but knowing I have friends who'll watch a "Girl Meets World" premiere with me in sweatpants at 10pm on a Friday night and actually call it a "party" - well if that's not family I don't know what is ;) I mean this: I love you! And you, and you, and you, and you... Thanks for everything!

No Slippers Before 70!

I love it when one of our off-air conversations make it on air.

This morning, while a song was playing, Freddie was telling us about walking out to the garage in his slippers to check on his cats.

Slippers???  Freddie wears slippers?  Who knew?

He turned to Lissa for validation.

“You wear slippers, right?”

I hear the word “slippers” and I immediately think of my Dad.  Not that that’s a bad thing, but it brings back memories of my Dad.  Sunday morning.  Robe.  Slippers.  V8 Juice.  Later, he’d sit on the couch and light a pipe.

Slippers to me, are something Dads and Grandpas wear.

Are guys in their 20’s and 30’s that listen to our show REALLY wearing slippers???

Apparently I’m kind of standing alone on this!  :)
#NoSlippersBefore70

Here’s what some of you said in the Text Club--

I absolutely hate feet so I'd rather have them covered by socks, slippers, or something. Everyone I know wears slippers.

My son is 19 and he is very particular about his footwear and he rocks his slippers!

I agree with Rocky. I'm 34 and don't plan on getting a pair of "slippers" for at least 30 years from now.

I'm a guy 23 and I wear Spongebob slippers...my girlfriends loves them too.

Rocky we can slap some skull and cross bones on them and whatever else you want on there to help you feel better about them

My boyfriend is 28 and wears his slippers (moccasins) all the time. I had to buy a new pair for Christmas last year bc his old ones were too smelly and ratty, I couldn't stand them.

Rocky join the dark side you get a Cookie with your slippers

I'm 53. Slippers? No way. Ever.

Yes! My 35 year old boyfriend wears slippers. Usually to step outside to smokeI am 39 and wear tweety slippers

Rocky that if you have a pet and have ever stepped in something warm and squishy at 2 o'clock in the morning you would wear slippers too

I am 33 and I have been wearing slippers since I'm like 16.

I agree with Rocky.  Slippers remind me of my Dad.

I love it when a guy will wear slippers and be cozy with me. I wouldn't want him cuddling with me, with sneakers on xD LOL

Slippers are INSIDE SHOES that are clean! Why would u wear disgusting outside shoes that u step in spit, pee or whatever else on ur rugs!!!!!

I'm 35 and I wear slippers around the house and outside to water the flowers and my girlfriend 26 she also wears them

My husband is from Eastern Europe and as soon as he walks through the door at home, on go the slippers! - Allison
